Wheelabrator Bridgeport

Wheelabrator Bridgeport

More than two dozen towns and cities in the Greater Bridgeport area count on Wheelabrator Bridgeport for dependable, environmentally safe disposal of up to 2,250 tons a day of residential and business waste as a renewable, local fuel that generates as much as 67 MW of clean power.

Wheelabrator Bridgeport began operations in 1988, creating a local, energy-from-waste ecosystem that uses local waste to supply the equivalent of the electrical needs to power 60,000 Connecticut homes as well as its own operations.

Wheelabrator Bridgeport plays a significant part in the City of Bridgeport’s revitalization. The facility directly employs 70 Connecticut residents, many of whom live in Bridgeport, and in 2014 created approximately $32 million of economic activity throughout the region. Working collaboratively with the city as a member of its Sustainability Implementation Program, Wheelabrator actively helps identify opportunities for the energy-from-waste facility to support the city’s sustainability initiatives.

In addition, the facility partners with local students who undertake important projects that benefit the community and foster environmental stewardship.

“Wheelabrator has been a model corporate citizen in our region for 25 years. The company’s commitment to a quality environment, a quality community and a quality workforce helps to make our region a better place to live and work.”

- Paul Timpanelli, President, Bridgeport Regional Business Council
