Wheelabrator McKay Bay

Wheelabrator McKay Bay

The Wheelabrator McKay Bay waste-to-energy facility, owned by the City of Tampa, uses up to 1,000 tons of residential and business waste each day from the city as a local fuel to produce as much as 22 MW of clean, renewable energy for the local utility. That’s a local-energy ecosystem generating enough energy to power 12,720 homes, as well as its own operations.

The facility actively promotes environmental initiatives such as the annual Hillsborough River & Coastal Cleanup, Silver Spoons & Sandcastles and The Great American Cleanup and supports organizations such as Audubon of Florida and several Tampa civic organizations, including the Hillsborough Firefighters Benevolent Society and the Fraternal Order of Police.

Wheelabrator maintains long-time partnerships with Tampa schools and educational organizations, such as Desoto Elementary School, Garland Stewart Middle School, Hillsborough Education Foundation STEM FAIR, Shrine Circus, Kids Wish Network and ARC of Florida.
