Wheelabrator South Broward

Wheelabrator South Broward

Located in Fort Lauderdale, the Wheelabrator South Broward waste-to-energy facility is capable of producing 66 MW of electricity, enough to power 41,002 homes as well as its own operations. The facility uses as much as 2,250 tons of everyday household and business waste each day as local fuel to create a local-energy ecosystem that generates clean, reliable and renewable energy for the local utility.

As we process post-recycled waste, we reduce waste volumes by 90 percent, and we recover, reuse and recycle the rest, including ferrous and non-ferrous metals. The ash residue is disposed of at our South Broward ash monofill located adjacent to the waste-to-energy facility.

Wheelabrator South Broward is actively engaged as a significant community partner throughout Broward County, supporting numerous non-profit organizations including Leadership Broward Foundation, Partners in Education (PIE), EASE Foundation, Young At Art (YAA) Children’s Museum, as well as serving as a founding partner of SOS Children’s Villages.

Facility employees also volunteer their time and expertise through partnerships with local Broward County middle schools, empowering students to become active environmental stewards in their local community.

“Wheelabrator is the corporation that has been involved with SOS Children’s Villages-Florida (SOS) for the longest period of time, dating back to our opening in 1993. Wheelabrator occupies a seat on our Board of Directors, is always willing to assist with special projects, the leadership attends our special events, and the corporation is an excellent ambassador for SOS in the community. Wheelabrator is a model corporation involved with the not-for-profit community and has indeed changed so many lives of foster children in such significant ways. We are indeed very grateful.”
- Marjory Bruszer, Former CEO, SOS Children’s Villages, Broward County
